Muscle XL™ is suitable for all horses, especially those in pre-training or ‘slabby-sided’, ‘flat rumped’ horses, including:

  • Racing horses, hunters, show jumpers and eventers prior to and after hard racing competition to provide supplementary amino acids for normal muscle recovery.
  • Equestrian horses for top-line development (dressage, hacks, show horses).
  • Endurance horses - provides amino acids to help counteract exercise-induced muscle break down during long distance training and competition.

It is best to give the recommended amount within 15 minutes (but an absolute maximum of 30 minutes) after training exercise (or even walking or treadmill exercise), as long as the muscles are warm and are recovering from exercise. Most horse owners and trainers find it convenient to either give it in a small double handful of feed.

Once the benefit of proper protein synthesis is established by improving muscle bulk and top-line, then providing Muscle XL on alternate days can help to maintain normal muscle mass. However it is also helpful to give Muscle XL on the last 3 days before each race or competition and for 2-3 days after race/competition day to maintain normal muscle recovery and maintain muscle bulk and top-line between races/competitions.

How Muscle XL Works:

Muscle XL™ provides concentrated branched chain amino acids (BCAAs) and other essential amino acids, as well as vitamin E, organic sulfur (MSM) and organic zinc, which are specific nutrients required for normal muscle development and regeneration after exercise. The natural nutrients in Muscle XL™ are highly digestible and quickly absorbed by the muscle cells for a fast-acting, effective increase in muscle bulk, strength, stamina and top-line. The high quality, low sugar formula builds MUSCLE – not fat!

Muscle XL™ can supplement diets low in amino acids, vitamin E and zinc for the normal growth and maintenance of muscle in all horses.

Directions for Use


Muscle XL™ provides a natural food source of essential branched chain amino and other amino acids, as well as Vitamin E, organic sulfur and organic zinc, as specific nutrients which have a role in normal muscle development and recovery after exercise.  The nutrients in Muscle XL™ are highly digestible and are nutritionally used during recovery and maintenance of the working muscles following exercise. 

 

High protein supplements are recommended for all horses which are poorly muscled, ‘slabby-sided’ young horses, horses which lack the physical strength for training, or those which have lost muscle mass due to injury or sickness.


Initial Supplementation Rate 

The recommended amount is 15g (1 scoopful) per 100 kg body weight (or 5 scoopsful for a 500 kg horse) daily for 10-14 days, or until the muscle has developed to a normal desired bulk for a horse in training. However, it is important to give the daily amount within 15 minutes after exercise.  This is because the concentrated amino acids in Muscle XL™ are preferentially taken up into the body if they are given within 15 minutes after exercise.  This is the time period during which muscles are normally recovering and are able to take up and utilise the amino acids, such as glutamine and branched chain amino acids, in Muscle XL™

It is best to give the recommended amount within 15 minutes (but an absolute maximum of 30 minutes) after training exercise (or even walking or treadmill exercise), as long as the muscles are warm and are recovering from exercise.  

Note:   Muscle XL™ can also be given by sprinkling it over the top of the first meal after training exercise.  It is slower to be taken up when mixed into a full feed in diluted form and takes up to 4 times longer to achieve its optimum effect.  It is best given in a small feed – e.g. double handful of the normal feed given after training and offered within 15 minutes after exercise, then provide the full feed.

 

In a weakly muscled horse, daily administration as recommended after exercise will start to help normal topline and muscle strength within 5-7 days, much more quickly compared to anabolics or other herb-based ‘muscle builders’.  After 10 days, most horses will have a normal topline and muscle bulk.  In well-muscled horses, the increase in normal muscle ‘bulk’ or topline will not be as obvious, but usually within 7-10 days, they will maintain optimum physical effort during exercise.  Some horses may require up to 14-21 days to develop a normal topline and bulk to the degree desired. 

 

Once the benefit of normal protein synthesis is established as evidenced by muscle bulk and strength, then using Muscle XL on alternate days can help to maintain normal muscle mass.  It is also helpful to provide Muscle XL for the last 3 days before each competition and for 2-3 days after competition, to ensure optimum recovery and maintain normal muscle bulk and strength between competitions.

Q.     When should Kohnke’s Own® Muscle XL™ be given to a horse to aid muscle development?

A.   It is best to start Kohnke’s Own® Muscle XL™ when a horse first comes into training, or is being prepared for the show ring or competition, where a good topline is required.  It is of less value to start a horse when it is resting, as it takes up to 4 times longer to have a normal muscle bulking effect, compared to when it is given after exercise to a horse which is in training or being worked each day on a regular basis.

 

Q.     What type of horses benefit from Kohnke’s Own® Muscle XL™?

A.     Horses which are normally poorly muscled, ‘slabby sided’ or horses which lack physical strength for training, hard exercise or competition. It also helps horses which would benefit from improved topline and normal hind quarter development for dressage, eventing and showing, yearlings or other horses being prepared for sale, as well as aged horses with a loss of normal muscle mass and toplineKohnke’s Own® Muscle XL™ does not put on fat, it provides specific high quality protein and other synergistic nutrients to build and maintain normal muscle tissue in working horses.

 

Q.     What is the most efficient, quickest and effective time to give Kohnke’s Own® Muscle XL™ to build normal topline and muscle strength?

A.     Field studies have shown that the natural source of concentrated branch chain and other amino acids in Kohnke’s Own® Muscle XL™ are preferentially taken up into the body if the supplement is given within 15 minutes after exercise.  This corresponds to the time period after exercise when the muscles are normally recovering and are able to take up and use the amino acids, such as glutamine and other normal muscle building nutrients, used for rapid replenishment after exercise.  It is best to give the recommended amount (15g – 1 scoopful per 100kg body weight) within 15 minutes (but an absolute maximum of 30 minutes) after exercise, such as training, lungeing or walking, as long as the muscles are warm and recovering from exercise.

 

Q.     What is the best way to give Kohnke’s Own® Muscle XL™ after exercise?

A.     It is best to give Kohnke’s Own® Muscle XL™ in a concentrated form to allow it to be preferentially taken up into the muscles during normal recovery. Ideally, the specific nutrients are most rapidly taken up in a small feed – e.g. double handful of the normal after-exercise feed, within 15 minutes after exercise. Kohnke’s Own® Muscle XL™ can be given in a full feed, but it is slower to be taken up in this diluted form and can take up to 4 times longer to achieve its optimum benefit.

 

 

Q.     How long does it take before a benefit is seen from Kohnke’s Own® Muscle XL™?

A.     In most cases in a weakly muscled horse, daily administration as recommended after exercise, will help to build normal topline and muscle strength within 5-7 days, much more quickly compared to anabolics or other so called herbal based ‘muscle builders’.  After 10 days, most horses will develop normal topline and muscle strength.  In well muscled horses, muscle ‘bulk’ or topline will not be as obvious, but usually the horse’s strength, physical effort and ‘impulsion’ during exercise will be apparent within 7-10 days.  Some horses may require up to 14-21 days to develop a normal topline and bulk to the degree required for the show ring, competition or sale.

 

Q.     During the initial 10 day course, if a day’s training is missed, is it of benefit to give Kohnke’s Own® Muscle XL™ on that day?

A.     No – continue Kohnke’s Own® Muscle XL™ on the next training day.  Ideally, for optimum benefit, the initial course should be given after exercise for 7-10 consecutive days.

 

Q.     Is it necessary to continue daily supplementation of Kohnke’s Own® Muscle XL™ after the initial 10 day course?

A.     In most horses, once topline and muscle strength has reached normal proportions, then normally the supplement needs only to be given for short 5-7 day courses at 2-3 week intervals, to help maintain normal muscle bulk and topline.

 

Q.     Is Kohnke’s Own® Muscle XL™ of benefit in the lead up to other upper level competition?

A.     Kohnke’s Own® Muscle XL™ will help to maintain normal muscle strength and provide natural antioxidant protection when given for 3-4 days prior to competition, including on the day of eventing, show jumping, dressage, hunting or endurance competition.  It contains only natural foods which are permitted prior to competition.   

        

Q.     Does Kohnke’s Own® Muscle XL™ help muscle recovery after exercise?

A.     Kohnke’s Own® Muscle XL™ can be given each day for 2-3 days after strenuous exercise to help normal muscle recovery and maintain muscle bulk and topline.

 

Q      In yearlings or other horses for sale, how long before should a course of Kohnke’s Own® Muscle XL™ be started prior to sale to improve topline and appearance?

A.     In most cases, a 14-21 day course is adequate, provided it is given as directed after daily exercise, which can consist of walking or lungeing, so that the muscles become warm and recovery processes are commenced.

 

Q.     In aged horses which lose muscle mass, or horses recovering from sickness, injury or surgery, how long should a course of Kohnke’s Own® Muscle XL™ be given to achieve an optimum effect?

A.     Daily administration in feed at the recommended supplementary rate for 2-3 weeks will help to develop normal bulk and maintain recovery of muscles and topline. Short courses can then be given as required to maintain normal muscle bulk. Kohnke’s Own® Muscle XL™ is also suitable to help sick or poorly grown foals, yearlings and other horses  develop normal muscle strength and bulk over a 2-3 week period.
