A natural supplement to help reduce fat stores in overweight horses and regain health and vitality.

TRIM™ helps strip off ‘cresty’ necks and abnormal fat deposits safely and easily.

TRIM™ provides many specific nutrients, including:

  • Magnesium, which has a role in supporting normal metabolic function and glucose utilisation in body cells, especially with diets low in magnesium.
  • Organic chromium, for natural regulation of glucose metabolism.
  • Choline and manganese, which have a role in the metabolism of fats.
  • Vitamin C to help production of metabolism co-factors and breakdown fats in the body.
  • Many other vitamins and minerals that act in synergy to support normal sugar and fat metabolism, including B group vitamins and organic zinc, which are especially important when feeding restricted, weight-reducing diets.

Before and After Trim

Combine TRIM™ supplementation with a reduced soluble sugar (water soluble carbohydrate (WSC)) intake by soaking hay or feeding a low GI (low calorie) diet for effective weight management.

Directions for Use

TRIM™ is formulated to provide a range of nutrients which have a role in normal metabolic functions.  These nutrients have been selected to make-up shortfalls in the diets of horses restricted to low GI or low calorie rations, especially when hay is soaked to remove sugars and non-structural carbohydrates, which also leaches out many important water soluble nutrients.  Magnesium has a role in maintaining normal metabolism and is often inadequate in low GI diets.  Chromium, included only in an organic ‘chelated’ form, is considered to have a role in the normal regulation of glucose metabolism.  Manganese and choline has a role in the metabolism of fats.  The other selected vitamins have roles in general metabolism for optimum health and vitality.

Supplementation Rates

Providing at least 30 minutes of exercise at the walk and trot each day is also an important adjunct to weight reduction in horses and ponies.

One level scoopful of TRIM™ delivers 20g.

Horses               350-600kg bodyweight      20g (1 scoopful) morning and evening (40g daily).

Ponies/Minatures         120-350kg bodyweight      10g (½ scoopful) morning and night (20g daily).

The daily supplement rate is based on the body weight of a horse or pony at the start of an energy (calorie) controlled or low GI diet.  The recommended daily rate can be reduced to half once an optimum body weight is reached to help maintain a normal trim condition (ie Horses given 1 scoop per day, Ponies and miniatures given ½ scoop per day).

Soaking hay leaches out many soluble trace-minerals, vitamins, and salts.  A daily dietary supplement of trace-minerals and other vitamins, such as Kohnke’s Own® Cell-Provide™, or Kohnke’s Own® Cell-Perform™, as well as a salt mix, is recommended to meet shortfalls in the diet, especially when soaked hay is the roughage base of the calorie controlled ration.

NOTE:   Restricting grass intake and feeding soaked hay should form the basis of a calorie controlled diet.  Hay is best soaked for 60 minutes in twice its volume of luke-warm water to leach out soluble sugars and limit energy intake, and then drained and air dried prior to feeding.  At least half the hay by weight should be fed as soaked alfalfa hay or crumbled cubes to provide calcium and protein.  If alfalfa hay or cubes are not provided, then a low GI protein supplement, such as full fat soyabean meal or rapeseed canola meal, should be included in the ration.

Questions and Answers

Kohnke’s Own® Trim™ provides a range of important nutrients to correct shortfalls in the common low GI fibrous and soaked hay rations fed to horses on weight reducing, low calorie diets.

It can also be used to supplement prepared commercial low GI diets, where the full recommended feeding rate is not fed and other high fibre feeds, such a sugar beet and soaked hay,  are added to make-up the bulk of feed.

Kohnke’s Own® Trim™ is formulated to provide specific nutritional support to horses and ponies on calorie controlled diets which are overweight or obese and which have hard ‘cresty’ necks and abnormal fat deposits behind the shoulders and tail butt area.

Q.     Why is it important to ensure that at least 30%-50% of the total hay by weight fed each day is recommended as soaked alfalfa hay to a horse on low GI feeds?

A.     On the label of Kohnke’s Own® Trim™, specific directions are included to feed a blend of soaked alfalfa and cereal/grass hay to limit sugar and NSC intake as part of a low GI diet.  The reason for including 30%-50% by weight of soaked alfalfa hay is to provide a natural source of high quality protein (15%-17%) and calcium, as these important nutrients are often low in fibrous, calorie controlled hay and sugar beet based diets.  Where soaked alfalfa hay is not included in the weight reducing diet, then a non-starch protein meal, such as full fat soyabean meal or rapeseed / canola cake meal, should be included to provide an adequate intake of crude protein.  If soaked alfalfa is not provided, then a supplement of calcium and phosphorus should also be added, such as 10g (½ tablespoonful) of dicalcium phosphate (DCP) per 100kg body weight, daily to the feed mix.

NOTE:  Kohnke’s Own® Trim™ provides a high concentration of magnesium which is often low in low GI diets.  On a low alfalfa, or no alfalfa based calorie controlled diet, it is recommended that Kohnke’s Own® Trim™ be added to a separate area of the feed mix and the calcium supplement to another area. It is important to avoid competition for uptake between these essential minerals.  Where Kohnke’s Own® Trim™ is only supplemented once daily, then a calcium supplement is best added to another meal to help avoid mineral inter-action.

Where soaked hay forms the feed base and soluble nutrients are leached out by soaking, an additional supplement of trace-minerals and vitamins may be needed, such as Kohnke’s Own® Cell-Provide™, or Kohnke’s Own® Cell Perform™ to make-up any nutrient shortfalls in the soaked hay.

Q.   Does Kohnke’s Own® Trim™ need to be supplemented on a daily basis for long periods?

A.    No.  Kohnke’s Own® Trim™ helps support a low GI, weight reducing or ‘stripping out’ diet to help normal weight control.  Once a horse or pony has lost weight and its ‘cresty’ neck and tail-butt fat has softened and decreased due to the low calorie diet and daily exercise, the supplement rate of Kohnke’s Own® Trim™ can be reduced to half the daily starting rate relative to its lower body weight and condition.
